Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Program Accredited
Wednesday, August 11, 2010  11:30 AM

Thomas P. Rasmusson, President and CEO, Avera Queen of Peace Health Services, is pleased to announce that the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation to the cancer program at the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center. According to Rasmusson, “A facility receives a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation following the onsite evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a Commendation level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program, including cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, and quality improvement.  In addition, a facility receives a compliance rating for all other standards.”

Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care.  Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and 42 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care.

Rasmusson continued, “Earning a CoC accreditation is an important accomplishment for the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center. This designation signifies that our cancer program has been recognized as offering the very best in cancer care. It is recognition of the quality of our comprehensive, multidisciplinary patient care.” Rasmusson added, “Not only did the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Program receive a Three-Year Accreditation, we also received Accreditation with Commendation which signifies 100% compliance in a number of the cancer program standards.”

Accreditation by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and who undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review their performance. To maintain accreditation, facilities with CoC accredited cancer programs must undergo an onsite review every three years. The cancer program at Avera Queen of Peace has been continuously accredited since it became eligible for accreditation in 2001.

Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem to bring regional meeting to diocese
Wednesday, August 11, 2010  11:26 AM
The Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in the Diocese of Sioux Falls will be hosting the annual gathering of the eight-state Northern Lieutenancy in September of 2011. The three day gathering is expected to draw about 500 people to Sioux Falls.

It is the first time the Sioux Falls group will host the gathering since it was organized in 2001.

The order itself dates back to the first crusade in 1099 and was created for the purpose of safeguarding the tomb of Christ and to provide assistance to pilgrims in the Holy Land. Early Knights committed themselves to lives of prayer and charitable work for the Holy Land.

Today the Order has international membership and its primary role is to support and assist the Christian community in the Holy Land. Membership carries responsibilities in keeping with the original intent, requiring its members to serve the Church with their prayers, alms and activities. Members of the Order contribute financially to the building and support of Catholic schools, hospitals, orphanages and churches in the Holy Land. Pilgrimages to the Holy Land continue to be important for members who are able to travel as they serve to deepen faith and remind members of the “way of the cross” in the land where Jesus lived and preached.

The organization of the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre in the Diocese of Sioux Falls dates to 2001. The visit of the patriarch of Jerusalem, Michel Sabbah as part of the diocesan Journey to Holiness gathering encouraged development of the order locally. Dr. Samir and Mary Abu-Ghazaleh were already members and were helpful in the formation which continues to grow and now has 36 local members.

The Order members participate at many diocesan functions and Masses at the invitation of the bishop. Bishop Paul Swain is also a member of the Order having been invested in Madison, WI.

A wonderful local feature is that for the last three years, the Adoration Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament have assisted the Order by making the medieval-looking capes and berets for the new members of our region. The coat of arms found on the sleeves of the capes is sometimes referred to as the red Jerusalem Cross - symbolizing the five wounds of Christ. This coat of arms is the symbol of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem and is important to all things associated with Order.

There are nine lieutenancies (regions) in the U. S. with the Sioux Falls Diocese in the Northern Lieutenancy, an eight state region including South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Colorado.

Planning is currently underway for next year’s much anticipated gathering in Sioux Falls. For further information please contact area counselors Dr. Samir and Mary Abu-Ghazaleh at 605-582-2275.

Diocesan help for Haiti grows
Wednesday, August 11, 2010  11:23 AM
In the six-plus months since a devastating earthquake hammered the island nation of Haiti, close to half-a-million dollars has made its way from the diocese and from groups and individuals in eastern South Dakota.

The bulk of the money came through a special Haiti Relief collection authorized by Bishop Paul Swain and collected in the diocese.

Another $82,000 went to Catholic Relief Services from other groups and individuals with zip codes in the Diocese of Sioux Falls.

Madeleine Philbin, midwest regional director for Catholic Relief Services said during an interview on Catholic Views, the weekly diocesan radio program, that CRS is now entering its long-term strategy to help rebuild Haiti.

The agency has fed 900,000 people and continues providing food, water, sanitation, shelter materials and medical care for hundreds of thousands in Port-au-Prince and beyond.

The outpouring of support from Catholics and others of good faith in the United States has enabled CRS to bring life-saving aid over the last few months.

CRS continues to supply food regularly to approximately 100,000 children in over 270 schools and 100 orphanages and child-care centers.
