Catholic Cemeteries

Dear Fathers, Deacons and Parish Administrators:

In May 2008 you received in the mail a booklet titled "Catholic Cemeteries Management Letter" dated March 2008. The Management Letter was written for the Diocese of Sioux Falls by Joseph B Sankovich, a consultant of the diocese, who specializes in working with Catholic Cemeteries.

The purpose of the Management Letter and the two letters which will follow on Policies and Procedures, Rules and Regulations and workshops is to: (1) to provide basic clergy education on the ministerial service of Catholic cemeteries so that pastors are able to comfortably delegate the day-to-day obligations of this ministry, and (2) to educate/update those laity involved in parochial cemeteries so that they are able to carry out the church's service in this ancient and important ministry.

Attached is a registration sheet for the workshops addressing the multiple issues and recommendations contained in the Management Letter. The workshops will be conducted by Joseph Sankovich and will have adequate time for questions and answers. We would ask you to invite a member of your cemetery association, board or advisory council to attend. To allow this to be as interactive as possible, we are limiting the attendance to 1 person, other than a priest or deacon from each parish or cemetery member.

Priests and deacons should have received a copy of the Cemetery Policies and Procedures in the mail. Please see the attached registration form for the meetings scheduled June 22-23-24 and return by June 15. Encourage members of your cemetery boards or associations to attend. A video will also be available. Any questions, please contact Deacon Roger R Heidt in the Planning Office:
